Excerpt 2:

We did it only once. In corridor C14. At that hour, the section was in shadow, with the lighting cycle dimmed and the sensors paused for maintenance. He looked at me as if he knew. As if both of us had been waiting for that window for weeks.

We didn't take off our helmets—that would have been a severe violation—but we came so close that the spheres fogged up. It wasn't a perfect kiss. There was clumsiness, a bump of shoulders, a silent laugh. But there was also something else. A tremor. A kind of fear that didn't stem from the rules, but from ourselves.

We knew that after that, we wouldn't synchronize the same way again. That something had escaped the system. We didn't say it, of course. We just rested our foreheads against each other and breathed. The filtered air smelled of ozone.
