The buzzing in my temple never stops. It is a metallic heartbeat trying to replace my own, pressing cold steel against what remains of my cheek. I close my eyes seeking refuge, but even in the darkness, unrequested data flickers. I am so tired. This armour devouring my skin is too heavy, this network keeping me connected when all I crave is silence.
In the moments the signal fluctuates, I remember the touch of rain on my bare face and the warmth of a cup between my hands. I search for the echo of your voice calling me by my name, not by the designation burning across my retina.
They are erasing me, replacing my scars with cables. And yet, the ache of missing you is entirely my own. As long as it hurts, I will know I am still here, beating beneath the metal, refusing to be a machine. Just a machine.
