Fragment 1:
When she wakes, she looks at no one. Not even herself. She prefers watching what doesn't move: the window, the wall, the vague outline between buildings. From bed, she observes structures stripped of history, windows holding rented lives.
The world keeps running as if she hadn't completely abandoned it. Sometimes she turns on the radio and tunes it to where nobody speaks. She likes voiceless spaces. Her body, still warm from sleep, is the only familiar territory.
Light doesn't enter. It merely brushes against the wall, as if it had no intention of staying. She wonders if anyone else lives like this: right on the edge between waking and escape.
